Get Found on Google Maps: The Local Business Profile Checklist

Oct 22, 2026·5 min read·By Boss Branding Agency

Here's an uncomfortable truth: you can make the best Reels in your city, but if someone Googles "best barber near me," "taco spot in [your town]," or "med spa in [your suburb]" and your business doesn't show up on the map, you're invisible to the exact person ready to spend money today.

That map pack — the little list of three businesses with stars that sits above everything else — is driven by your Google Business Profile (the free listing formerly called Google My Business). For a local business, it's arguably the single most valuable piece of real estate on the internet. And most owners set it up once, years ago, and never touch it again.

Here's the checklist we run for every local client. Most of it you can do yourself in an afternoon.

1. Claim it and fill in every field

Go to google.com/business, claim your listing, and complete it — not 80%, all of it. Hours, phone, website, services, attributes (women-owned, wheelchair accessible, free Wi-Fi), the works. Google rewards complete profiles, and every empty field is a question a customer has to go elsewhere to answer.

2. Nail your primary category

This is the biggest lever most people get wrong. Your primary category should describe your main service specifically — "Taco Restaurant," not just "Restaurant"; "Med Spa," not "Spa"; "Auto Detailing Service," not "Car Wash"; "Barber Shop," not "Salon." Add secondary categories for the other things you do, but don't change your primary one on a whim. It's one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches you show up for.

3. Make reviews a habit, not an afterthought

Reviews are rocket fuel for the map pack — and recent ones carry real weight. A business with a steady trickle of fresh reviews looks alive and trustworthy; one with 200 reviews where the last was 14 months ago looks stale.

The best time to ask for a review is the moment a customer tells you they're happy. Make it a step in your process, not a once-a-year scramble.
  • Ask in person, then text a direct link to make it one tap.
  • Reply to every review — good and bad. A calm, professional reply to a negative review often earns more trust than the five-stars.

4. Keep your name, address & phone identical everywhere

Your "NAP" — name, address, phone — should match exactly across your website, Google, Yelp, Facebook, and every directory. "St." on one and "Street" on another, or an old phone number floating around, creates confusion that quietly drags down your ranking. Audit for duplicate or outdated listings and clean them up.

5. Write the description for a human

In your profile description, write like you're talking to a customer: what you do, the areas you serve, what makes you different, how fast you turn things around. Skip the keyword stuffing — it reads as spam to people and isn't the magic it used to be.

6. Add real photos — and keep adding them

Profiles with fresh, real photos get more clicks and calls. Your storefront, your team, your work, your food — swap in new ones regularly so the listing never looks abandoned. (This is also where great video stills and content pay off double-duty.)

7. Point it at a fast, trustworthy website

When someone taps "Website" from your profile, the page needs to load instantly and look legit — or you lose them in two seconds. A slow or dated site undercuts everything your profile does. (If yours needs work, that's literally what our web design service is for.)

The bottom line

Social media gets you discovered; your Google Business Profile closes the deal when someone's actively searching. Spend one afternoon on the checklist above, then add it to your routine: ask for reviews every week, refresh your photos every month, and keep your info accurate. It's free, it's fast, and for a local business it's one of the highest-ROI hours you'll ever spend.
